Flora is a black belt teacher of White Crane Silat–Kuntao, a form of kung fu Martial Art of Chinese Indonesian roots. Growing up in Paris, France, she began exploring movements through classical and modern dance at an early age. In 1978, she embarked on a journey to South East Asia, which changed her life forever. She got initiated to White Crane Silat (Martial Art) and for 20 years she lived in Indonesia between the main Silat center, on the island of Java, deepening her practice in the presence of her Masters (Suhu and later Gunawan), and her home base near the Indian ocean, on the island of Bali, where she eventually opened a Dojo and offered classes and retreats, perfecting her skills as a teacher on top of her regular daily practice.
She has become known for sharing her passion of Silat in a natural, caring, graceful way and offering different programs based on her 30 years of practice and her rich Indonesian experiences while upholding the tradition of Silat. She likes to bring the roots of this Martial Art, alive to modern practitioners in creative, dynamic and life transforming ways, still respecting the essence of Silat and the natural unfolding of each person she trains and supervises.
Encounters with teachers from other great spiritual traditions have fertilized her spiritual path. Apart from her Balinese name “Nyoman Rai” which she was naturally given to her by the Balinese people, she was also blessed with the spiritual name of “Ganga”(the sacred river in India) by Sri Poonjaji, a great Master of advaita Vedanta, which is a nondual teaching. Since then she has been flowing with the current of her new directions, which is traveling and teaching Silat worldwide including Esalen Institute, Big Sur Califonia, Austria, Spain, Bali. She is now based is the west, though still making regular visits to Indonesia, one of her favorite places in this world.
